USASA NATIONALS COUNTDOWN

PHOTO Joe Schwartz RIDER Juicebox Stompson

Jeremy Thompson '06 One of the hardest working kids you will ever meet. Finals both days at the Open, no one does that anymore.

THE COUNTDOWN

Our departure date for nationals is only a day away and we want to say thanks for a terrific season. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in Colorado, and are psyched for the 27 SMS athletes who have qualified. Those who have qualified can be confident that the accomplishment alone is something to be proud of. For those who have fallen just shy, know that your season is not measured by national’s qualification, but by the work you have put into the year. From now until summer camp you can begin to prepare while others are still competing. Get a jump on it and make it count!

It has been a great year with lots of progression and podiums, but more importantly the kids are smiling, confident, and ready to wind down the season with one more fun event.

We will be meeting with the whole team today and congratulating everyone on a great year. Our message will be simple and we want to remind everyone that the effort they put in and the dedication they have shown will be the measure of their success this season. Nationals is one day in time and their worth as competitive snowboarders is far greater than any one day will show. While we wish everyone to have their best runs on these days ahead we have seen in the past that some will stand on the podium and others may not. Both deserve praise. Please assist us in these upcoming weeks by supporting our message. A conversation that you can have with your son/daughter that does not include snowboarding can feel very refreshing at this time of year. They all are putting pressure on themselves, remind them to have fun and enjoy the experience.

The USASA coaches and trainers association would like us to remind all parents that they are not allowed in the field of play. This includes start and finish areas, and judge or timing booths. Spectator areas will be well defined and we encourage you to cheer on all of those who are participating, and be models of good sportsmanship. Certified coaches are the only people who may have conversations with officials or judges during competition and we ask that you help support us here. As a reminder scores are opinions, and are never open for protest. We may check calculations, and ensure tricks were recorded, but we may not argue a score.

The forecast is for sun and 45 next week in Colorado and it should be an amazing week. Good luck to all of the competitors and travel safe.

See you at Nationals,

Mike

Rained outa dodge.

It has been a fun adventure having the elite crew along with the typical Jackie and Mike show. The level of enthusiasm and laughter is inspiring and it has been a blast. Stops seven and eight of the Nor-am SBX tour concluded today under snowy, rainy, windy skies. Jackie and Mikey stepped up to the challenge of the two day stacked field all gunning for the coveted World Cup spot. Some changes were made to the course from the rev and some sharpened features and jumps had everyone a little shaken early on the first morning yesterday. After settling in Jackie charged through the first heat but encountered a bobble on the second run that would end her day in 6th. Mikey in his first ever nor-am turned heads as he picked of Nor-am veterans and athletes with Word Cup experience one by one. He narrowly missed the four man final and raced to a solid 7th in the consi round.

Day two brought the weather and with it more challenging conditions. Jackie well out front got caught in some snow missed by slippers and would settle for a ninth. Mikey continued his tear and proved he was not a one day fluke. "Wonder boy" was thrown around at the start as he was one of the youngest men in the field and was picking of pros like they were standing still!!!! The tear ended again with a photo finish in the semis narrowly missing the final and a trip to the consi round. Riding tough he again placed 3rd in the heat and a solid 7th and the second US junior on the day (under 19.) Jackie will bounce back strong and with one more stop to go on the Nor-am tour and a full 500 point race in her sights at Tremblant on the 31st, the season is poised to end up in fine fashion. She has had countless podiums this year and is working hard. In SBX racing anything can happen and perseverance and hard work puts you in the best position to be successful. Currently she sits in second for the title just 172 points off the lead.

So many highlights NOT caught on film...all the racing action...Jackie shredding the pipe with grabs! Joe cab ten, fs ten, Hunty cab ten, Phoebe huge fs fives, and bs sev attempts, Mikey bs nines, and charging the sbx, Chris locking in and boosting up (check the fs nine) and sbs five and countless others.

Think positive thoughts for Hunty as the aforementioned stomped ten went a little deep and he is nursing a sprained ankle and strained knee.

Here is a clip of what the boys (and Phobe) have been up to in addition to cheering on their teammates.

Be home soon.

Jr Jammers

US OPEN jr.jamming

After all the heavy hitters had a day to rest on Sunday from the US OPEN. The Jr. Jammers were not resting, finals were going off! I thought I should check some I.D.'s at the start because these guys were riding like adults. JJ,Scottie,Jp,and Maverick were full of energy. The heats were stacked and all rode great. Maverick Shaw was the only one to make it to finals out of the SMS crew. Maverick placed 14 in finals, one of the youngest in the Jr jam feild. The Jr. Jam is the stepping stone for many, and many are now pro level. Great job to all that rode today ! Think big..and you will go big!

SMS Represents on Home Turf!

Louie Vito 06' and Ellery Hollingsworth 09' graced the US Open halfpipe podium in the SMS backyard yesterday placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Always great to have you guys around and back on campus. Congratulations on two amazing seasons!

US Open Slope

Yesterday in the men's semifinal Eric Beauchemin put down two beautiful double rodeos but fell just short of the final cut on the sunny slopestyle course. World class riding is what put EB in the USOpen Slopestyle two years running proving him to be one of the nations toughest and most technical up and coming pro slope competitors.

For the women Kiley Kennedy was representing SMS as the youngest finalist on the hill. KK was out there mixing it up with past open winners as old as 33 as well as dew tour champions and TTR world champions. Kiley put on a great show stomping out a forty five foot half cab method, afifty five foot front three and a this giant mute grab over the final jump before greasing the cannon of terror with her signature old school method. She placed 12 in the final and twelfth in the womens qualifier for Half Pipe on thursday am. Huge congratulations are in order. Give her a pat and Thanks if you see her before she heads back to Choate for exams this week. KK will rejoin the group at nationals on the 2nd of april.

Randall and Spencer are into the mens semifinal of HP this am. This is the seminal event in mens HP snowboarding. To ride on saturday at the open is a trip on the other side of the fence. Just a few heavy riders each year get to walk that hill.
Thanks to everybody for getting out and supporting the kids this week and Thanks to Joe Shwartz for this great shot of KK.

Final Rev Tour

Two for one. Yesterdays halfpipe saw great riding from the whole SMS crew. Hunter, Mikey and Phoebe just missed but rode solid and all will have GP spots locked for next year. Jenn, Joe and Chris all rode in the afternoon big dance. Jenn started off with a smooth stylie roast beef to method to 3 cab 3, fs 5, melon, air fakie nose and sick cab 5. She got just edged out by .1 and will make a good argument for a jr worlds spot sitting in 4th for the day and 5th for the overall. Joe got bucked his first run but came up smiling and landed a monster nine only to be ousted by the ever changing stunt ditch. Chris stepped right into the stacked finals and came through charging into huge airs and 3 different sevens for an outstanding 5th place.

Sbx was today and bluebird and 50 was the call. Mikey qualified 21, and made a brave move into the 2nd turn in his first heat but ended up odd man out when the dust settled. Jackie smooth and confident all day continued her tear, and after being .3 out on her first run, smoked the field by .9 on her second and lane choice for the day. Smooth sailing through heats 1 and 2 and onto the final. In the final jackie missed her pull but stayed on target and climbed into second through turns one and two. She hung in ISTC star Carrie Urens draft until the final turn ala Seth Westcott and passed Carrie with just feet to the finish.

Amazing day of racing and headed into Nor-am practice in the am.

The boys and Phoebe hiked the pipe in between cheering on Mikey and Jackie. Here is what went down.
Joe back to back nines, and back in full form. Chris had Michaelchuck attempts and bs nines so close. Hunter bunch of front nines and a front ten in the books. Phoebes bs five 2 ft out grabbed and clean with some bs seven trys. Game on.

Fun times and more to come. Congrats to the crew at home riding tough and representing. Be sure to head up to the Sunbowl and cheer them on.

Thanks,

Mike

SMS Riders Advance in US Open

KYLEY KENNEDY'S BIGGEST FRONT 360 EVER

BROKEFACE KILLA

The sunny days persist, as do a select few SMS riders. Going into the final two days of the event, RANDALL STACY and SPENCER SHAW are in for HP Semis on Saturday. ERIC BEAUCHEMIN made the cut into SS semis, broken nose and all. And KYLEY KENNEDY landed two of the best SS runs of her young life today, putting her directly into Finals tomorrow. Best of luck to these dedicated rippers!

US Open

JAMES HAFFNER

ERIC B

Its been an amazing intro to the US Open. Temps high, sun blazing and soft jumps/pipe. By the end of the day boots and socks are soaked and faces are sunburned. I can't recall a better start to this event.
After 2 days of Mens HP and SS pre-quals and quals, SPENCER SHAW and ERIC BEAUCHEMIN are still in the game, while Randall Stacy and James Haffner just missed the last cuts (and I mean just). Randall learned front 9s in HP and is stomping them in his runs. He may be allowed into the semis, as he is right on the bubble. James is landing killer runs, but small slip-ups kept him from advancing.
Eric qualified easily today, only to break his nose on an edge catch between jumps. He will be back for quals tomorrow, swollen face and all.

Rev Slope

This day had it all. Sunny start followed by rain, freezing rain, some snow, fog, and constantly changing conditions to keep riders on their toes. The women's field was deep and Phoebe stepped right up and stomped smooth back side three over the big side, clean noes grab and linked a tech rail section. When the smoke cleared she placed a very respectable 7th just .5 out of the final and locked up her spot in the Grand Prix for next year.

The boys heats were no exception and the young guns were spinning like tops. Mikey and Chris both put together solid 7 to 7 runs but ended up just off the cut. Joe and Hunter put on show with big cab nines and bs 7's that qualified them 1 and 3 into the final. With weather changing it was anyones game. Both boys had to go to their second runs and couldn't keep it clean enough to find their way onto the podium. They rode tough and the conditions were gnarly, and they should be stoked on their riding. All the boys locked down their spots in next years Grand Prix slopes and are primed and hungry for tomorrow's pipe!

Practice day goes off!

So much action, so not many photos, this one was my morning view of the fresh cut.

The kids were on lockdown from run one. The vibe was loose and fun and after a quick breeze through registration we were first up and had the place to ourselves. It never froze last night so we had to throw it into gear early as the conditions were going downhill fast. The fifty degree sun had the mountain feeling like summer at hood and we wasted no time. By the time most crews rolled in our posse was linking contest runs like it was the US Open. Phoebe continues the style and grace with solid bs three's over forty footers, Hunty cab nines, Tierney front seven like it's his job and the whole boys crew took Ians speech last week to heart and stomped a train of bs nines that sent the place into a roar. Who does a train of bs nines? I laughed out loud on the next run when Hunty superman front flipped the big side of the first jump with Mikey and Co. hot on his tail. Too much fun, these guys are ready for tomorrow.

At the stunt ditch guest coach Jackie had Jenn all dialed in even before i rolled down. Jenns smooth airs and tech tricks at the bottom shows her experience and focus coming into this one. I was impressed when after some stomped contest runs she busted into some cab seven trys. A little smoother pipe and the speed will be there, look for it in the future.

Coaches meeting, tuning, and then dinner with guest Saul Cohen tonight should set us straight for a confident nights sleep.

Wish us luck, slope tomorrow.

Sunny and Sick

Meadows at Mt Hood is going off! The view from the meadows side up onto the glacier is mind blowing. We are used to seeing it from the south in the summer and the slightly eastern winter view provides a whole new perspective. It provided an exciting ride up the access road and a perfect back drop for our day. The snow was 8-10 of day old velvet with wind blown stashes to slash and sunny skies and 40 plus degrees to boot.

The park featured a fun jump line with back to back 45's(our crew didnt even glance at the small sides) and a 35-40 ft. step up into a couple mellow rails and a wall ride that can be taken several different ways. Jackie even stepped right to it and after i showed her where the knuckles were and how not to do it, she blazed the line with ease. Everything was butter and the whole crew linked sevens. Some of the highlights were Phoebe's smooth bs 3's over the first jump and Hunty raising the bar with a bs rodeo up the step up that would of had had T Rice drooling. Jaws were left open.

The pipe was soft and friendly and everyone stepped right into the game. Jenn put down 3, cab 5 by run three and had the contest run with 3, 3, 5 in place by run five. Phoebes had 3,3,5,5 flowing like vt sap in the spring and the boys amidst all of the slope slaying made time to put in all of the pieces needed for productive, progressive pipe runs. Mikey and Joe were crushing and both had nines and lofty airs. Hunty and Chris hiking for the last pieces right at the end let me know these kids are on a mission.

We were at the counter at Huckleberrys by 2:30 and the shakes taste better in the winter than in the summer.

Official practice tomorrow.

Fun times, more to come.

Rev Tour #4

We just arrived in Hood and my first look at Government camp in the winter. I am impressed. A foot of new and bluebird for the next ten with only a chance of rain on Tuesday. The crew of Jenn, Joe, Phoebe, Chris, Hun-t, Mikey and Jackie have some serious goals for this week and are sure to shake up the standings before the dust settles after this last qualifier for Jr Worlds. Currently the SMS Elite crew sits with five of twelve possible hp/ss objective criteria spots and there is room to add more. Jackie is also locked for SBX but is hoping to add to her lead in the Nor-am standings with three races here.

We figured the field would be diminished due to the conflict with the US Open, but it appears that only a few heavies headed back home for the big dance and the field here is still as deep. Our kids have been grinding it out all year and their recent success speaks volumes for the commitment of Ian and Dave and i am honored to try to fill their shoes. The level of shred is a testament to the hard work being put out and five of twelve is no easy feat. I am psyched to be here with this crew and was reminded of the level of commitment during our seamless travel day here. Pro all the way. On snow should prove to be more of the same.

While waiting for Phoebe, Chris, and Joe to get in from a later flight we ventured into Portland and stumbled into a Saturday festival on the river. We found trees in bloom, amazing food, sweet tie dye tapestries (that are now decorating our crib here,) and a slew of street performers, crafts, and Portland locals to pass our time. Great start to what promises to be a productive trip.

Got the kids knocking down some homework early so we can focus for a few days, no one even shrugged.

Some may have glimpsed at Louies triple dub run and Euro X games Bronze, but after that it was all business. Congrats Louie, im sure y'all will see it first hand in a week!

Ill keep you posted,

Mike

Dew Tour jumps and the Development Team?

For the Development Team the 65 to 70 foot long Dew Tour jumps at Mount Snow aren't part of our daily agenda. But I could see by the look in Chip Linton's eye that he would have left the mountain disappointed if he didn't give it a try. So on Friday after Chip watched a couple of the Pro/Am and Elite team members hit the jump and we figured out his speed, Chip went for it. With a huge straight air Chip just made it over the knuckle of the jump! It is definitely the biggest jump he has even gone off of and after he stopped shaking with adrenaline he went back up and hit it clean 3 more times. Connor Callen also felt up to the challenge and hit it clean, and once was a enough for him. Congratulations guys for stepping up and sending it over a Dew Tour jump!

Southern Vermont series finals

Saturday and Sunday are the last days for the Southern Vermont series finals at Okemo. Okemo really put on a great event for season ender. The weather could have not been any better. The slope coures had by far the biggest jump of the season. Some complain about small jumps, well there was no talk of this 55' table top! The SMS crew stepped to it with out thinking twice. Sunday was the pipe contest and the weather was still awesome. The super pipe was cut perfect and held together well all day. The attiude of the day was great and everyone was in great spirts. It's funny what a little sunshine will do for the soul. After the pipe event everyone headed down to Out back pizza for the season ender party. Scott Palmer put on one great party. He had more giveaway bags then ever. Ross Powers was even there to hand out the half pipe awards and sign some posters. It's nice to see that Ross will never forget where he came from. It's sad to see the season end for us here on the eastcoast. For the ones who have made it to nationals, the season continues!

Back on top!

Windsor, Nova Scotia is the birthplace of hockey, it is also the pumpkin capital of Canada. It is home to some very special people including our very own Alex Duckworth '06 (who, along with her whole family, wanted me to say hi and send some love back to SMS.) Seeing SMS family on the road is always a treat and i am continually blown away at how proud people are of our little school and how fondly they recount their memories here.

Martok SKI located in Windsor is also the "home hill" for snowboard legends and Olympians Mark Fawcett and Trevor Andrews. Neither were present for the event, but during our stay Martok became the "home hill" to what is left of the Olympic Snowboard OC and on only one days rest from Vancouver. We were in good hands! The Chief of Course, the Chief of Comp and the builder of the Olympic halfpipe Steve Petrie all were on hand to host the most eastern SBX FIS Nor-am ever held in North America. I saw old friend, mentor and FIS TD legend (and former colleague of John Casella circa- 1972,) Ted Martin, and I knew this was a very special event, in a very special place.

Jackie Hernandez and I arrived on day one at Martok to sleet, rain, and 40 mph winds. This was the third stop of the Nor-am tour and Jackie is currently ranked in 3rd, after six races. In one hour we had successfully navigated every inch of Ski Martok and were cold and wet . Feeling a bit defeated from our not so warm, warm-up day we decided to see what else we could find to inspire. Sometimes on it is these explorations you can find the time needed off of snow to ease the mind and the body and prepare for what lay ahead. We were both pretty psyched with our find (Jackie kept the puck) and felt ready for the next days competition.

Blustery skies and spitting snow met us early on contest day number one. The course was in great shape and Jackie adjusted quickly to the Nova Scotia snow and wind. This track had far more air than the two previous Nor-am and suited Jackies abilities well. She qualified 2nd against rival from the last two stops Sarah Hunter of Canada. At every race where Sarah has entered she has won time trials and the day. Today would be no different as Jackie eased through round after round only to meet Sarah in the finals and the only American woman to represent. Jackie has been working hard off of snow on her starts and it is really starting to pay off. She got the hole shot through turn one, but into turn two Sarah's experience and tact made room where there was none and snuck by Jackie. Jackie stayed in the draft until the final straight but the uphill winds were too much and Sarah would take home another victory. Jackie was confident and poised with a solid second place on the podium.

Day two was like we were on a whole new planet. What had appeared grey and dreary for three days straight opened up to beautiful views of the northern most tip of the Bay of Fundy. Martok is only a few hundred meters tall but the elevated view above the coast was inspiring and we knew the day was special.

Jackie smoked the first run pack by .75 and beat 70% of the boys with her "gotta win one" attitude. Lane choice in boardercross is determined by your qualifying time and it was apparent that on this course it would be very important. Noone could better the first run score and Jackie had won her first time trial of the Canadian Nor-am stops! In boardercross anything can happen and the focus has to remain pretty intense as you work your way through heats. Often times the fastest rider goes out in the first round or makes a careless error and gets caught in traffic and ends a day early. Jackie was all confidence and smiles and she stayed on target as the heats clicked by. The final stacked up again with Jackie being the only American and Sarah Hunter of Canada set to upset the ship. We had figured that Sarah would take the same lane as yesterday and try to pass Jackie high on turn two as she had done the day before. We were confident that the board was faster and pretty sure Jackie could hold her off. With thirty seconds till gate drop Sarah unexpectedly chose lane four to Jackie's right. This could only mean one thing, the first corner was to the right and if you could make the move inside you would be hard to catch the rest of the way down. The Canadians had likely realized their boards were slower and the only way through would be to force a spot on the inside in turn one. This is never a good spot to be in if you are the next person outside. The person in front has all control and can make your real estate very small in a short period of time. The only counter is to have at least a half board position and close the door right at the gate. The rider on the inside then has to check or dq. With seconds to gate drop i muttered the words but Jackie had already assessed the situation and gave a big smile and nod. Game on! When the gate dropped Jackie exploded from the start and although Sarah was jockying for the inside, Jackie shut the door and Sarah had to check up in order to stay on course. When they left sight out of two Jackie was clear by three and would make it five board lengths by the finish. This was her first win on the Canadian side of the tour and now moves her back into the lead in the Nor-am standings!

Jackie will race twice in Mt Hood next week and then the final stop will be at Tremblant on the 31st for the Nor-am finals. All the points on the line and the field will be deep with gold and silver medalists as well as several international olympians.

The winner of the tour receives a personal spot on the FIS World Cup.

Congrats to Jackie and the hard work she has been putting in leading up to this race. Give her a high five if you see her.

Thanks,

MIke

Boreal Day 2

I was actually lamenting our departure from snowy VT 2 days ago. I no longer do as CA has welcomed us with unreal conditions. You saw the pow footy from yesterday. Today the sun came out and we had 2 parks and an amazing pipe, all with well groomed fresh snow. The kids went off. Some things I saw:
Hunter Wood's large back 9 in HP.
Phoebe Novello just off the landings of back rodeos.
James Haffner clean front 9s in HP.
Eric B stomping cab 9s with style
Later in the afternoon I headed to the slope course with Phoebe, Serena and Kiley. The girls stepped right to the jump line and by the end of the day Phoebe stomped 4 out of 4 switch back 180s over a 30ft jump and Kiley landed a massive half-cab method over the 35ft jump.. Both are pictured below, along with a large rocket air from Serena.

Elite Team in Boreal

We arrived safely in Truckee, where I gave the crew a long talk about buckling down on this trip and gunning for the podium. With that focus in mind we rolled out this morning and became slowly aware of a major change in the day's mission. The mandatory chain station was our first clue, the blinding blizzard our second. We were one of the first in the Boreal parking lot, which was calf deep. We got our training tickets and immediately ran into east coast legend and Boreal Park Ranger LANE KNNACK. We were informed that the park, BX course and HP were buried and most lifts closed. Bummer right? Wrong. With the mt to ourselves, we gorged on pow. Its hard to film on such a day, but I squeezed in a few clips of RANDALL, JOE, pow slayer MIKE PERLE, and KILEY KENNEDY. Back to that focus tomorrow......
